Each day after harvesting at Moothi Estate we truck the fruit to “Mudgee Wines” to get our crush on. Mudgee Wines is located about 5 km North of Mudgee. This site is where the majority of our wine making and storage processes will occur.
A gigantic thanks goes out to Luciano Lombardini of Mudgee Wines. Without his help and facilities, this project wouldn’t exist. Thanks Luc!
Each small batch has unique characteristics and needs to be added to the previous crush. Some are thrown in as whole bunches, others are crushed in their own buckets before adding to the mix. Some of the later picked bunches had started to dry a little and upon crushing were reminding me of nanna’s raisiny fruit cake. With gentle handling, these characteristics should be present in the final product. This is but a small part of what will come together for our blend.
Next stop, Beaurepaire Ridge, to continue our Cabernet collection and be on the lookout for some Petite Verdot.
Welcome to Moothi Estate vineyard. 6km South-East of Mudgee, NSW, Australia. This gravelly block rests above granite and ironstone and has north, east and western aspects that roll down to the Lawson Creek.
It’s the second week of April and 4-5 days into the new moon. We’ve just started hand picking some brilliant Cabernet Sauvignon to go towards our Cab/Petit Verdot blend. This particular harvest will continue for another week before we start the ferment. That’s Chino resting in the back, short for cappuccino. He’s well seasoned to vineyard life after travelling most of the way around Australia from the Barossa Valley up around the west coast of W.A. down to the chill of Tasmania and the journey continues…
